Build Your List Faster With Your Own Product

by Chris Morris on March 30, 2009

Two of the biggest problems that I get questions about all the time are:

1.  How to create my own product?
2.  I do not have a list I want to know how to built one.

Each of these problems on their own are huge, and together they seem impossible to overcome. When I got started looking for an opportunity to make money online I felt like everyone else was so much smarter than I, and that everything I seemed to read or hear about eluded me and made me feel so unsure of myself. I had no idea where to start. I wanted to build a list and then my goal was to create a product that I could sell to that list.  But I did not have a list and more importantly, I desperately wanted to know how to built one.

Fast forward to today. I have a list of over 10,000 double optin subscribers and customers who know, like, and trust me. That’s just one list. I have several smaller lists in between but this one list is from my very first information product that I produced. I have intentionally taken you from past to present to show you that I have indeed created a highly reponsive optin list and I have also produced my own successful information product. So I definitely qualify to share this information with you.

Let’s go back to the beginning here shall we? You must remember that I had no list. No product. No prior experience…Nothing. I used to work as a security guard for crying out loud…NO skills necessary. Just Kidding in case any security guards are reading this. :D But seriously, I had no special skills or training in my life that I could fall back on to help make this work. I had to learn everything from scratch and even worse is I was out of a job and barely had any savings. I needed money fast!

So let’s recap, I needed a list and I needed a product in order to get some cash to save my butt. And in case you don’t know me yet, I am married to an awesome woman ( Missy ) for almost what…almost 10 years now ( Wow ) and together we now have 5 kids ( Yeah, FIVE! ) 3 Girls and 2 Boys. Don’t worry…We’re done! So needless to say I was in a VERY difficult spot and coming home to my wife to say I quit my job was the HARDEST thing I have ever done.

Once the worry and anger wore off a little and I recuperated from my injuries ( thanks hun :) ) I forced myself to learn everything I could find about list building but it was easier said than done. Even after I read what I thought to be good relevant information about list building I was still stuck. I might as well have not even read the information in the first place because my inner thoughts were crushing me. You know…The inner voices that tell you that you “Can’t” do something. It’s rediculous. I couldn’t just listen to them, I have a family that I need to take care of.

I bring this up because it’s so relevant. I can’t tell you how many emails I get, or questions that I answer that sounds just like how I felt when I was working hard to get started. You feel frustrated. Angry. Terrified. Excited. All at the same time sometimes and it can drive you mad. You must fix that inner dialog, you can’t ignore it or shut it off, it’s there for a reason. BUT, you can make it work for you and not against you. Here is a tip…Everytime your inner voice starts to say you “Can’t” do something, the second you hear it coming you replace it with “I will learn to do” and you fill in the blank as you go. By doing this little exercise you will turn that negative around into a goal and objective and instead of it being something that is holding you back, it’s now a goal that you are actively working on and will master. Each obstacle you encounter like this, you should repeat that process over and over and you’ll be amazed at how well that actually works.

Alright. So far we still have no list and no product but you already know that I have overcome those objections when I flash forwarded to present so you may be asking yourself  “What Changed”?  And looking back it almost seems like it happened so quickly but it didn’t. Things only began moving fast for me when I finally discovered the one course that really changed my life. This is not a sales pitch by any means but it’s necessary to tell you that it wasn’t until I discovered Mike Filsaime that my life changed.

I’m so bad with dates ( ask my wife ) so please forgive me here but a few years ago or so I found Mike Filsaime, I don’t remember how but it may have been inside the Warrior Forum to which I’ve been a member of for years now. But Mike ( back then ) was not the Mike you know today, but was definitely on his way to the success that he deserves! Mike came out with a home study course called Buttefly Marketing and I remember all the hype and buzz it got but really didn’t know how to take it since I was fairly new to this whole idea of internet marketing so I just sat back and watched.

I was fascinated by his success and was surprised to find out that Mike Filsaime was a car salesman before learning and picking up internet marketing. This began to sound off every alarm in my head telling me to pay very close attention to what ever Mike has to say. I didn’t buy buttefly marketing right when it came out…in fact, I couldn’t even afford it. I’m almost embarrased to admit this but I contacted Mike personally by email one day and I remember telling him how much I appreciated everthing he’s done for me personally even though he’d never personally helped me other than his forum posts and things that I found online from him. I didn’t even think I’d ever receive an email back from him, I didn’t expect to but I decided to send an email anyway on the off chance that he would see my email and wanted to reply back to me.

I don’t know how long it took him to reply honestly but he DID reply personally. I was able to make arrangements to buy his course and Mike and I followed through with the deal and it was the best damn deal I’ve ever got in my lifetime. Honestly. I remember the day the package came and I immediately tore into it and devoured everything he had to say, I went into the private forums and began to interact with other butterflies and this is where things changed for me.

I know this is a long post and I certainly didn’t intend it to be, but looking back so far I believe it’s necessary to tell you as much of my own story in hopes that you find one element that you can identify with and recognize that there is hope and you will succeed if you do not give up hope. I’m going to tie this all together very quickly I promise. So once I began interacting with the other members and absorbed the whole butterfly marketing concept, I was able to start to help those who had their own questions and problems and learn even more than I had before.

I ended up PM’ing ( Personal Messaging ) a guy on the forum, I don’t remember what it was all about now but it wasn’t anything about business. Maybe it was just saying hello to a new person. Could have been. But that person turned out to be someone that helped me put all the pieces together very quickly and that is Bob ( The Teacher ) Jenkins . We began to share messages back and forth for a while and during those messages we began to build a friendship from it. Bob messages me one day and says that he’s got a project that he’d like to see created and produced and asked me if I was interested. Sure…I said. So he told me about an idea to create a set of video tutorials that would take a user step by step through the process of managing their websites using only CPanel.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with CPanel, it’s a web interface that is used to manage your online websites. Now I had some knowledge on CPanel, I didn’t think I was an expert by any means but looking back now I realize that it isn’t the point. There is always someone just starting out and knows even less than you do so in their eyes…You ARE the expert!

Alright, back to the story…

So Bob knows I was ‘fresh’ out of the Buttefly Marketing University :D and was eager to put my new found skills to the test but I honestly believed I was NOT ready…Not by a long shot. Remember earilier that I wasn still trying to figure out list building and then I dove into the Butterfly Marketing Course? Well you wouldn’t know if now but I was about to be thrown head first into the deep end of the pool and it was either swim with the fishes or be eaten by the sharks. Nice right? :)

Over the course of the next month or so Bob and I had multiple telephone calls back and forth to each other, we did conferences and shared desktops and regularly updated each other on our progress. Bob made these killer mind maps that really helped me stay focused on my work ( I get distracted pretty easily ) because I have kids still at home. But one thing that pushed me to make this all work was the accountability that I had. Not just to myself and my wife, but to Bob as well. Keep in mind I’m pretty much broke at this point and I’m putting all the chips on the table hoping to break the dealer. :)

It took me about a month…maybe less, but I created over 15 step by step video tutorials that did exactly that. There were things in between all this that put all the rest of the pieces to the puzzle together but this is exactly what I did to create my very first product. Now, there was things like niche research, topic selection, setting up a membership site and taking payments etc. but pretty much it was easier with the system that Bob and I worked on together to complete it.

We launched that product around June or July of 2007 and because of the Butterfly Marketing Script ( Membership Site Platform ) I was able to build a list and also launch my very first product all in one step. The membership site software I use has a built in support for collecting names and email addresses and more from the customer before they even buy so it’s a very good list building tool too. You can offer a free report or gift on the front end and collect your visitors information before sending them through your sales funnel.

Ok, so let’s wrap it up because I’d LOVE for you to share your thoughts and experiences with me too. To this day we have over 13,000 members and have paid tens of thousands alone in affiliate commissions and of those, 10,000 or so have double opted into my list and I can market to them over and over again. This experience has changed my life and I want to share this with you too. I want you to have a product creation breakthrough like I have and I’ve got something big in the works but for now, share your thoughts and comments here with me. If you have specific questions, I’d love to hear them and I will try to answer some of them here. If I don’t get to your question, it’s not ignored I promise you, I will keep track of your reponse and will give you more killer content soon!

Hi Chris and thankyou so much for sharing. I believe that also a major part of your development, infact anyone’s development is also gained by marketing and branding yourself. You have clearly achieved that Chris and well done to you Sir.

Kindest Regards – Graham Price UK

Chris Morris March 30, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Well hey there Graham, thanks for stopping by and sharing that with everyone. I hope this post will help someone overcome that fear or anxiety and have a breakthrough like I did.

I have something big coming soon that I’m excited about but it’s a little too early to discuss publicly but for now you guys are encouraged to share your thoughts and comments or questions here and I look forward to hearing from you!

NICE post Chris..
I’m sure that 98% of the people who read it have or still are where you were in the beginning.
Myself…I’m at the 18th month of a break from the 16 hour days I put in the first 7 years trying to make the income I wanted.
I made some and even purchased the property I live on with my better half here in AR.
I will be returning in full steam ahead in the next few months. Meantime I am still gathering materials for a membership site and reading all I can get my hands on.
I have all the scripts installed on my web server and a very very small list.
What is holding me back….. I got burned badly by a couple of marketers who supposedly had credability. Who think their sit don’t stink..You know the type….
Anyway, enjoyed your post and I’m sure most others who read it will also get a bit of motivation flowing from reading it too.
Look forward to your emails and blog post. One of very few I still read after all these years.
Good luck on your next venture…lookin forward to seeing what it is.
Bill

Hi Chris, This is a very inspirational story. I have met Bob and I can say he is a very good guy. I met him at a internet seminar put on by guess who, Mike and Pauley in Baltimore a few years ago. This was right about the time when I think he knew he was ready to take the next step. I am amazed at his progression. I have also exchanged emails with you in the past, though I am sure you do not remember. I am now where you were and am trying to get to where you are. It is a pleasure to actually know people in the business who have achieved. It let’s me know it is possible. This has gone on to long, just wanted to say thanks.

Timothy Millar March 30, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Hey Chris, I can relate to your story, I am about to lose my home in 7 days. I have been trying to get a website up for 2 months, My graphics guy stuck it to me so I had to do something different but I got it up. Maybe too late tho. One way or another I will keep it up and Reach my Goals. Perseverance and Patience.

Agnes March 30, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Hi Chris,

I liked your post. Believe in yourself, that’s the big truth and sometimes you need a helping hand. Writing English is very hard for me, video no option can’t speak English, but still I make dollars. You have to find your own “power” to make things happen and yes allow people to help you, but never forget the people that helped you. Like you do now! I really like that.

Chris Morris March 30, 2009 at 10:06 pm

@Bill – Thanks buddy, I appreciate it! That really stinks that a few bad apples ruin it for those of us who truly do care. I am available anytime Bill just email me TheInkedMarketer at gmail dot com.

@Andre – I love Mike and Paulie…oh and I can’t forget Donna Fox, That’s my Tweeple! :-) I have a bad memory but I remember…lol. Now if I could only remember all these pop quizes my wife throws at me I’d be in business!

@ Timothy – I know all too well about foreclosures buddy…I am sorry to hear this news :(

I have a graphics guy I use who is awesome and in fact I passed him along to Bob and we both use him…he’s good. His name is Siah, email me if you want his contact info.

It’s never too late, there are people in worse situations that have come back so don’t let that internal dialog hold you down and keep you from your much deserved success.

I’d like to see Bob pop in here, I’ve asked him to read and post but he’s been such a big help to me now and when I got started so another “Thank You” to Bob for everything you’ve done for us man…You truly deserve it!

@Agnes – Agnes is someone who has regularly emailed me back and forth and if you read her comment she’s mentioned that English is not her strong point but she’s already said she’s not letting that hold her back and as a result, she’s still making money online…Congratulations Agnes! :) If there is anything I can do to help you just email me ;)

Thanks for the post. I wish I had my own product ’cause I believe that’s a necessity for establihing yourself.

Sadly, I am not much of writer. Yes there is plenty of plr stuff on my computer but a lot is the same as others have – duplicate content.

Not being a writer it’s hard to make what plr I have unique. I am attempting to do that right now on the subject of bankruptcy.

Keep plugggggin’

Keith deBolt March 31, 2009 at 12:48 am

Hey, Chris-

Great inspirational post! And for anyone who hasn’t had the good fortune to meet Chris yet, I will vouch for his sincerity and deep desire to help others.

It is always refreshing to see a marketer’s REAL story, instead of the “How I Made $13,411.11 In My First 14 Days- And How You Can Too!” crap that sadly passes for marketing these days. We all face a learning curve- Chris’s story illustrates a great way to speed up the process: Get out and get involved! Reach out to others, to see what you can do for them… and maybe you will discover something they are willing to do for or with you!

I can add to Chris’s story–

I am the guy in the video on the DiscovercPanel landing page! I met Chris and then Bob at a seminar, and did a testimonial right then and there. My relationship with both of these fine people and excellent marketers has grown over time (although you and I have some catching up to do, Chris!), and I am now getting opportunities to use my skills as sort of a barter for some of theirs… interesting how the universe works, if you just start taking action and placing yourself out there.

Hats off to you, Chris, for this wonderful post and your genuine care and concern for the people you are in contact with… us!

Steve Shaw March 31, 2009 at 12:58 am

Hi Chris,

That was a great article, thanks for that.
I needed the inspiration. I’ve been at internet marketing for a year now and haven’t gotten anywhere. I just purchased Niche Blueprint and am very excited. It was a gamble, because I, like you were, am low on funds now and have a family as well.
Thanks again,
Steve Shaw

Chris Morris March 31, 2009 at 1:42 am

@ Bob – I’m not a huge fan of PLR or MRR stuff anymore…I think they widely devalue the product because they get spread across the internet either free or very cheap and no one respects that or limiting their use.

Don’t give up! :D

@ keith – Dude, you have some explaining to do man ;) Mr. Big Shot too good to call the ‘little’ guy…j/k man…how are you? Email me like today…no excuses. And thank you for the kind words Keith.

Keith is an awesome guy, if you haven’t connected with Keith then you really need to. He’s @keithdb on Twitter.

@ Steve – Glad you enjoyed it :) I haven’t been through Niche Blueprint but if you don’t test and implement it then you are better off not even buying it.

I hope they have a good consumption plan in place to help you make use of their product. Too many products are sold with disregard to the purchaser and helping them consume and implement what they just learned or get them into it at all.

I just got an email that Butterfly Marketing 2.0 is not yet sold out, I think I will send one more email out because this is one package that has changed my life.

The JaceMan March 31, 2009 at 2:23 am

Chris,

I just wanted to let you know (aside from grammar and spelling) that you’re not as bad a writer as you think you are. Your thoughts are illustrated quite well.

And while I thought your post was a great one, I wonder what it says about me that what I most took away from your article was… ‘Hmm, Mike Filsaime used to be a car salesman.’

*shrugs*

But in all seriousness, you do have to shut your own mind up when it’s giving you a list of reasons that you won’t be successful. God only knows there are too many other people willing to jump on the “You’re never going to…” bandwagon without climbing aboard ourselves.

Chris Morris March 31, 2009 at 2:29 am

@ Jace – Dude, thanks for stopping in and I told you I suck at writing, this is why I need to hire my kids to write for me…at least it would come off as intelligent :)

Erica Silvera March 31, 2009 at 2:40 am

Hello Chris, I have about 27 people on a list, but they are not responsive. I sent them a survey recently asking what they needed help with – only one answered the questions. I would like to have my own product, also, I would like to sell environmentally friendly products. Thanks for the blog post. I am still at the stage where I am wondering if I will be successful. I was able to get Mike Filsaime’s Butterfly Marketing, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Your blog post has given me hope. Erica

Chris Morris March 31, 2009 at 4:28 am

Hey Erica,

I’m glad you were able to pick it up because I know Bob has something in the works for butterflies and I have something that I am working on that will allow you to create your own product and build a list all at the same time :-)

I have a list of questions to go through but I may resurvey my list and make sure that I get all of their toughest questions answered in the course.

You need to give me more information on your list if you need help with that part, 27 isn’t a lot but you’re a head of a lot who have no list at all…you have to start one optin at a time :-)

It’s also your relationship with the list and other factors but if you need specific answers you can email me more information or just post here and I will try to answer you!

Chris

Georjina March 31, 2009 at 7:09 am

Hi Chris,
Very inspired writing and at a time when I needed it. Been avoiding building a list, have my own products now and guess it’s time to start diving into the information on my hard drive to build a list.

It simply seemed I’d have nothing to write about with a list, what do I say to these people…what do they want from me and worse, what no one responds to my survey asking them? Ugh, ok. That’s ‘what if’ talking, guess I’ll never know if I don’t do it:)

Thank you

Chris Morris March 31, 2009 at 5:33 pm

@ Georjina – That’s absolutely right! You need to keep up with them, they want to hear from you :) You just need to be giving them things that are useful to them and keep them interested.

I’ve had surveys where only a handful of people respond to and others where thousands responded to, I don’t let it discourage me one bit and neither should you.

Chris

Stuart March 31, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Hi Chris,
It looks as if your success really started with Butterfly Marketing. Thats really encouraging to hear.

I have ordered the script and hope to have it delivered soon so I can start to create my first BMv2 website.

I am really hoping that this will get me some income which I desperately need.

Thanks for a great post Chris.

Stuart

Chris Morris March 31, 2009 at 7:30 pm

Hey Stuart,

It was a huge turning point for me, I really don’t know how else to say it. I’ve been getting so many emails since this post and I’m excited for you :)

Heck, I’ve even called some of you guys and spoke for hours like we’ve known each other for years…lol!

I really enjoy helping people Stuart and I think that shows…I hope so anyway. I’m a husband, dad, brother, uncle, and hopefully ( not TOO soon ) I will be a grandpa :-)

I’ve got struggles and frustration and even though it’s hard to get that across in an email or a salesletter, I am no different than anyone else.

Email me, let’s connect! Heck we can even have a phone call if you prefer…just let me know how I can help you!

Paul Perry March 31, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Hey Chris
good post mate, thanks for giving hope to all your readers.I also have 5 children but 3 have grown up now and my oldest daughter has made me a granddad. So I am not the youngest marketer but there is always hope.I have started to network,I think that’s what helped you at the beginning of your marketing career.

Chuck Landi April 1, 2009 at 12:25 am

Chris

I belong to your discover cPanel membership site so the background of your getting started really interested me. I have a product that I would like to run by you because it could be used for a membership site. If interested, please e mail me.

Chuck

Chris Morris April 1, 2009 at 5:32 am

@Paul – Thank you Paul! They grow up too quickly am I right? :) Yeah networking is a big part of it because it allows you to leverage other people and their lists as well as their skill set.

@Chuck – Very cool…I’m glad you have got a product created, that’s a big step forward so now you need to take it another step and plan your launch.

You guys can email me any time at TheInkedMarketer @ Gmail.com, I may have posted it in full earlier so I hope the spammers don’t eat me for breakfast :)
