simple research tool

by Chris Morris on December 31, 2009

I was poking around online last night and came across a website with a handy tool that allows you to do research using a simple software interface. The tool looked interesting enough that I read the sales page for it and wanted to get it. They did a great job of convincing me that I needed it. The main promise is that you cut down your research time in half and that you have access to all the sites that you’ll need to look at when doing research for product ideas, writing book, or really anything.

The tool allows you to search four article directories, wikipedia, twitter, some forums, image sites and a LOT more. Ok, this isn’t going to be a sales letter for this thing but it does search a lot of cool places and puts them into one single location. The price tag was $37 for the software which is a good deal but I was really bored last night and being the ‘Geek’ that I am, I wanted to mess around and I decided that rather than buy the darn thing, I would geek out and try and code the thing myself.

Simple Research Tool

I’ve uploaded it for you guys to toy around with, I’m not sure what I plan to do with it but you guys can have it free by downloading it from here.

Let me know what you think of it. Post your comments below.

Chris,

This is absolutely the best research tool! It makes it so easy to do research, I don’t know what I’ll do with all my extra time! Thanks.

Way cool tool! Do you or does anyone know of a free tool to check for duplicate content in the article directories? How much text can I enter into your search box? Is there any character limit? I have a bunch of articles that I got with a couple products and I didn’t want to submit them to article directories without knowing if others had used them already. Call me lazy if there are some out there, LOL, I just haven’t had time to Google it and look yet. After seeing this great tool, it brought the question back into my head!

Happy New Year!

Hey Dave,

I don’t actually. I will keep an eye out though. Anyone else?

Hi, thanks for the tool.
Regarding the question to scan for duplicate content – have you tried Copyscape.com – their premium scan may not be free, but for 5 cents per scan it is very affordable

Chris:

I checked out this tool and I’ve seen and used others that are similiar, but not nearly as good. For most, I’m sure it’s a big time saver. Since I’m a writer and I’m always doing research on everything under the sun and moon, it was quite helpful; however, I’ve learned some research tricks and short-cuts of my own (I’ll have to enlighten everyone on some of them through using my own blog) and most of the time they serve me well. I do, however, appreciate the heads-up on the tool though and I’m certain I’ll get plenty of good use out of it.

I was just curious though – when you were “poking around” online were you actually looking for a new research tool, or did you just find yourself in the midst of an eerie co-inky-dink by stumbling onto the useful and interesting discovery that suddenly fueled your research inertia? I only ask that question because that’s how I usually end-up finding the most useful internet tools, sites and products that I use. I can never seem to find the best stuff when I intentionally try to.

Isn’t it strange how things come to enlightenment?

Hey Alan,

Thanks buddy!

You know what, I’m online so much that I end up finding a lot by pure accident :) But this tool saves a lot of time and I really enjoyed trying to piece it together so it was worth the time to create it. I am glad so many of you have found it a big help!

Hi Chris,
You have just saved me a load of time and problems with this checker – many thanks and much appreciated. Incidentally, as Pam said above, I recommend and use copyscape.com for checking duplicates.
A Happy, Successful and Peaceful 2010 to you.
