One of the biggest questions that I seem to get
from people is “How Do You Manage Your Time?”
It’s no secret that I have 5 kids and work full time
from home, so naturally people look at that and wonder
how I can manage to work around being at home full time
with my kids and still have time for my business.
It’s not easy to do but I will share with you some
tips to help you gain back control of your time and
allow you to focus on the things that will help you
manage your time more efficiently and start to see
measurable results.
The first thing I tell people is you need to eliminate
distraction and eliminate interruptions. I can’t tell
you how much time is literally wasted each day by just
checking your email and having an instant messenger turned
on.
I’m guilty of this myself but I try to limit myself to
checking my email once or twice a day and that’s it.
This is especially true if I have a project that I’m
working on and know that I need to devote all my time
and energy to it and make sure it gets completed on
time.
The key to being productive is to eliminate everything
that takes you away from being focused on one thing. I
suggest that you check email at the end of your day, if
you begin by checking email first thing, it’s easy for
you to get distracted and move on to un-productive tasks.
The biggest thing is scheduling your distractions.
Obviously we can’t predict when a visitor stops by or
when we get an important phone call we need to take,
but what we can control is how much time we will devote
to those things we can control. Like checking email,
surfing the web, responding to customer emails etc.
Multi-Tasking is another time management killer. You
should minimize multi-tasking and cut it out all together
if possible and simply focus on one thing at a time.
People who multi-task and are working several things
at once are inefficient. More often than not it shows
in their progress and results.
Your primary focus should alway be on RESULTS. Write
down the things that you need to accomplish for the
day and work them one by one until you have finished
your daily list.
I would recommend that you have 3-5 things on your daily
‘to-do’ list and give yourself about 50 minutes to 1 hour
maximum each day to complete the task in. This allows you
to set aside a specific amount of time for each task and
you can easily measure your results. I call this my “Fire to Butt System”.
I like to take breaks after each task, I would suggest you
take at least a 15 minute break after each task. At lunch time
you can take more, I would suggest at least a 30 minute break
but I’m lazy so I usually take about an hour and relax a bit.
If you do this every day you will experience the most leverage
of your time and see bigger results. It will give you a clear
outcome and the motivation you need to work towards it as well
as setting yourself up for success.

Great tips. I’m on my break so I guess it’s ok to comment. So true about checking the email. I have to turn off the ding.
I work out on the road and from home so the challenge of staying organized is slightly different with each setting.
I think we all struggle in this area. I know I do.
Thanks for the good help.
Because I provide little tips & tricks that my customers can use, one of my taglines is: “I waste MY time so YOU don’t have to”.
The problem is, of course, I can’t really just be wasting my time! I need to do it in a beneficial way…
I try to schedule this in blocks so it’s “focused distraction”.
Set aside specific time to run down Twitter rabbit holes or catch up on blogs and be sure to leverage stuff you find as valuable content for your subscribers…

Your “Time Management-Fire To Butt System” is great indeed. This eliminates considerable distractions people experience each day resulting in less productivity. Some times one would be busy yet achieving nothing substantial.Majority of people are guilty of this,
Applying your system indeed will result in higher productivity. The greatest time wasting activity on the internet is checking email. We appreciate that unless one is disciplined , it may be difficult to control spending reasonable time on mails especially among the Newbies who sign up to one e zine or the other.
You have provided solutions to time management which if applied religiously will improve productivity. Keep it up. I shall use your system to guide me and also recommend same to some of my friends who are also guilty of time mismanagement/wasting. John
Glad you all have found these tips valuable. I know I’ve been guilty of breaking these rules myself.
Key is to minimize these things that take away from productivity and stay on target for those things that will keep you moving forward!

Hey Chris,
I agree with most of what you are saying, but if a person isn’t making the money you are he has to multi-task.
I have a spam filter that I do not look at unless I’m expecting an email that I did not get and still I have to be checking/deleting from my inbox more tan once a day.

Hey Alvin,
Do you have your own products for sale online? Do you have your own services? Are you an affiliate? How are you making money online?

Pretty interesting. I’ve noticed that people are having real big problem with this one. The way I become more productive is the same something you talked about, eliminating destructions. One of my disruptions was chicken e-mail several times a day, but I set a goal to only check my e-mail one time a day, and do it at the end of the workday.
It’s all about leverage, if you want to be able to check several services or do things that you do every day on a regular basis, simply create a system of doing those things faster by creating the system and putting it in place once and then using it in order to save time in the future over and over again.
A great example would be Google reader.
By the way, I really like Lon’s tag line
